Chocolate Babka

A deliciously rich and tender chocolate babka, adorned with luscious melted chocolate swirls and a delightful braided design.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In another bowl, mix flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add melted butter and eggs, mixing well.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours.
  5. Prepare the chocolate filling: While the dough is rising, melt the dark chocolate and mix in cocoa powder, a little sugar, and vanilla.
  6. Roll out the dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
  7. Create the babka shape: Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the dough, roll it tightly into a log, and twist the two halves together.
  8. Second rise: Cover the braided dough and let rise for another 30 minutes while preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  10. Cool and serve: Let the babka cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For a delightful twist, try adding chopped nuts to the chocolate filling or a drizzle of glaze once cooled.
