Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 cup milk (or plant-based milk)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Warm the milk to about 110°F, add the active dry yeast and a pinch of sugar, and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the wet ingredients: Combine melted butter, maple syrup, and egg (if using) in a large bowl, then add the yeast mixture.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together flour, walnuts, and salt.
  4. Bring it all together: Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a sticky dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough: Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Let it rise: Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled.
  7. Shape the loaf: Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  8. Final rise: Cover the loaf and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffed.
  9. Preheat the oven: While the dough rises, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Cool and slice: Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
