Greek Gyro Mac and Cheese

A delightful fusion dish combining the creaminess of mac and cheese with the savory flavors of gyro meat, topped with tangy feta cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup gyro meat (or grilled chicken/mushrooms for vegetarian)
  • 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta: Boil salted water and cook the macaroni until al dente for about 8-10 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water.
  2. Prepare the gyro meat: If homemade, get it ready; if store-bought, slice into pieces and sauté in olive oil for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Make the cheese sauce: In the same pot, melt butter, add flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisk in milk and let it thicken for about 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Add the cheese and pasta: Remove sauce from heat, fold in shredded cheese, macaroni, and gyro meat. Adjust with reserved pasta water if necessary.
  5. Prepare for baking: Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C), transfer mixture to a greased baking dish, and mix breadcrumbs with olive oil for topping.
  6. Bake: Place in the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Garnish and serve: Allow to cool for 5 minutes, add extra feta, and serve hot.
