Smash Burger Tater Tot Bake

A comforting and indulgent bake combining crispy tater tots, seasoned ground beef, and gooey cheddar cheese.

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 32 oz (900g) frozen tater tots
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • Optional: Ketchup for drizzle

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in garlic powder and mustard, then remove from heat.
  4. Layer half of the tater tots in a baking dish.
  5. Pour the beef mixture over the tater tots, spreading evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over the beef mixture.
  7. Top with remaining tater tots to cover the surface.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until tater tots are golden and cheese is bubbly. Broil for 2-3 minutes for extra crispiness if desired.
  9. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a spicier version, add jalapeños to the beef mixture. This dish is great for leftovers and can be made ahead of time.
